Body Threads
What Are Body Threads and How Do They Work?

Threads are a widely used, non-invasive anti-ageing treatment that targets the reduction of wrinkles, the improvement of skin laxity, and the enhancement of skin firmness. At our dermatology clinic, we utilize two types of threads: PDO and COG. At Skin and Hair, the choice of threads to be applied is determined following a personalized assessment of the condition by Dr. Sotiris Theocharis.

A successful treatment outcome and patient satisfaction depend heavily on a precise evaluation of the issue, the dermatologist’s advanced technical expertise during application, and, most importantly, the establishment of realistic expectations regarding the final result.

BODY THREADS
Everything You Need to Know
1
PDO Threads

Standard PDO threads are inserted in groups depending on the concern being addressed, and this technique is known as mesothreads. PDO threads are fine and absorbable. They are made of polydioxanone (PDO), a bioresorbable and fully biocompatible material that meets European safety standards (CE). This material has been used for years in surgical procedures, especially for wound suturing.

The treating dermatologist inserts the fine PDO threads horizontally or vertically, based on the needs of the targeted area, using a small needle. From the moment of insertion, a dense mesh is formed that supports the tissues, creating a stabilizing structure that gradually helps the skin remain lifted in the correct position. Simultaneously, the body responds to the presence of this new material by increasing blood flow locally, which stimulates fibroblasts and enhances the production of collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid. As a result, the skin appears firmer and its overall texture is visibly improved.

2
COG Threads

COG threads are made of polydioxanone or polylactic acid and feature a barbed design with small hooks along their entire length, allowing them to anchor the skin in the desired lifting points. This structure provides a lifting effect in the treated area through the repositioning of the tissues, which is why they are often referred to as suspension threads. Simultaneously, due to the microtrauma they induce in the tissue, they stimulate the production of collagen and elastin. At the dermatology clinic Skin and Hair, both types of threads are used following an individualized assessment of the problem by Dr. Sotiris Theocharis. Accurate diagnosis of the concern, expert application technique by the treating dermatologist, and the establishment of realistic expectations for the outcome are all critical components for achieving optimal therapeutic results and patient satisfaction.

3
Where body threads are applied

Body threads can be applied to any area showing signs of skin laxity, such as:

  • Face – neck
  • Upper arms
  • Abdomen
  • Thighs – buttocks
  • Knees
4
Who is not a suitable candidate for body thread treatment

Body thread application is not recommended for the following groups:

  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Active acne
  • Autoimmune diseases
  • Use of anticoagulant medication in the past 3 days
  • Active herpes infection
  • Individuals with diabetes
  • Active dermatological condition in the treatment area
  • Cancer patients
5
Side effects of body thread treatment

Body thread application generally does not present significant side effects, but some undesired symptoms may occur—some more frequently than others. The most common include bruising in the treated area, localized tenderness, swelling, and redness. Less commonly, inflammation or an allergic reaction may occur.

6
Duration of body thread treatment results

The results of body thread treatments typically last from 12 to 18 months, depending on factors such as the individual’s skin quality, age, lifestyle, and the type of threads used. Periodic maintenance sessions may be recommended to sustain and enhance the results over time.

Before the insertion of threads into the body, a local anesthetic is applied in order to minimize any discomfort during the treatment. The entire thread insertion procedure takes approximately 30–40 minutes. You may return to your daily activities immediately afterward; however, physical exercise should be avoided for the first few days following the treatment.

Body threads can indeed be combined with other aesthetic procedures, such as hyaluronic acid injections and body mesotherapy, provided that the appropriate protocols regarding treatment sequence and the necessary intervals between sessions are strictly followed.

Body thread application is performed in a single session. Since the results can last up to two years, the treatment may be repeated after this period to maintain the achieved outcome.
